Cadillac Coupe DeVille, 1957 – Esa Malmström, Forssa

The Long-Awaited American Dream

Over the years, I’ve owned several old vehicles. I had dreamed of American cars since I was 18, but they had always remained just dreams. Until the day came when I thought, now or never. While browsing online, I saw this year’s 1957 Cadillac in Sweden. I thought, here begins the long process of convincing my wife, but surprisingly, she didn’t oppose it! I did explain that I WANTED this car.

Next, I had to plan a trip to Sweden. I had already spotted another car and arranged with the dealers that I would come to see them. (The other was a 1950s Ford Fairlane.) True to my nature, I was so optimistic that I thought I could easily cover 800 km in a day and make it back to the ferry. The other car ended up unseen.

I hadn’t prepared at all for inspecting the car—really, not at all! I had only bought a few magnets to make sure the car wasn’t a terrible patchwork.

When we arrived to see this dream car, the 1957 Cadillac, I told my wife, “That’s IT,” and I was smiling ear to ear. Since I had brought the magnets, I let my wife chat with the salesman while I crawled under the car checking the panels. I lay on the ground testing different parts with the magnet and concluded it was pointless—the car was flawless, and apparently, I was a pretty easy customer for the dealer.

The story could go on longer, but now I am a happy Cadillac owner. Last summer, we drove over 5,000 km, still with a smile from ear to ear.
