I first saw this Transit for sale on Nettiauto about five years ago and was instantly hooked — I had to have it. We almost closed the deal right after the first call, but surprisingly, the seller changed his mind and couldn’t bring himself to sell the Transit. I was really disappointed. Luckily, a few weeks later, the seller’s wife contacted me and said the car was now for sale — so I ended up buying it.
After that, the van spent the winter inside the lobby of a bowling alley, where I managed to fix up the interior nicely. Finally, spring arrived, and I could really start driving it. There was—and still is—a lot to fix, but every now and then it cooperates, and we can go on trips.
We’ve driven it several times to Åland and participated in the Great Saimaa Rally a few times (never finishing, because something always broke). This year, we’re determined to make it all the way to the finish.
When you go traveling with the Taunus Transit, you never know what to expect. The “old lady, year ’64” is moody and doesn’t always want to cooperate, which sometimes makes the “young lady, year ’65” next to the driver grumpy. But still, it’s just so much fun!
